Tag Taxonomy: How to Segment Subscribers from Day One

Tagging after 2,000 subscribers is too late. Build this taxonomy before the first capture form goes live.

You ever walk into a library where nothing is cataloged? Every book is there — a thousand volumes of useful knowledge — but they’re all piled on a single table. You can’t find anything without digging through the pile one book at a time.

That’s an email list without tags. Every subscriber is there. Their behavior, their interests, their purchase history — all happening in real time. But without a tagging system to sort and label that behavior, you’re left sending the same email to a gold investor and a food storage buyer and hoping one of them finds it relevant.

Nassim Taleb has this idea about “optionality” — that the value of a system increases with the number of choices it gives you. A tagged list is optionality made operational. Every tag is a future decision you can make: send this product to these people, this message to those people, this reactivation to the ones who’ve gone quiet. No tags, no options. Just broadcast and pray.

This article continues for paid subscribers with the four tag categories (source, interest, behavior, stage), naming conventions, the minimum viable tag set to deploy on day one, and the quarterly cleanup ritual that keeps your taxonomy from turning into noise.
