The VIP Buyers Club: Paid Membership for Curated Deals
A paid VIP tier can turn repeat buyers into recurring revenue. Model the economics, benefits, and retention mechanics before adding one.
I noticed something in my subscriber data around month eight that I almost missed: 340 subscribers had purchased through my recommendations three or more times. Same people, buying repeatedly, across different product categories.
Three-time buyers.
These weren’t casual readers. They weren’t opening emails out of curiosity. They had internalized my recommendations as a buying signal. When I said “this is worth your money,” they believed me — because I’d been right the three previous times.
I sent them a direct email. Simple question: “If I created a members-only list with early access to the best deals, product drops, and exclusive discounts I negotiate with merchants — would you pay $19/month for it?”
Of the 340, 112 responded. Of the 112, 78 said yes.
$19 × 78 = $1,482/month in recurring revenue. From people who were already on my free list. From a single email.
That’s when I realized that the toll position model has a revenue layer that most operators never see: the subscribers themselves will pay for better curation.
The economics of the VIP layer
Your free subscribers earn you money through affiliate commissions — typically $1.00-$2.50 per subscriber per month. Good money. Passive. Compounding.
Your VIP subscribers earn you the same affiliate commissions PLUS a monthly membership fee. Double-monetized.
Free subscriber: $1.80/month (RPS from commissions) VIP subscriber: $1.80/month (commissions) + $19/month (membership) = $20.80/month
A VIP subscriber is worth 11× a free subscriber.
If just 5% of a 4,000-person list converts to VIP (200 members):
- VIP membership revenue: $3,800/month
- VIP commission revenue: $360/month (same RPS as free, but concentrated)
- Total VIP layer: $4,160/month
That’s on top of the $6,840/month from the remaining 3,800 free subscribers. Total list revenue jumps from $7,200 to $11,360 — a 58% increase from adding a paid tier.
VIP Club Economics Calculator fallback for Substack: model the VIP layer as:
list size x VIP conversion rate x membership price
Default example from the live calculator:
- 4,000 total subscribers
- $1.80 free subscriber RPS
- 5% VIP conversion rate
- $19/month VIP membership price
- 10% VIP exclusive discount
That creates 200 VIP members, $3,800/month in membership revenue, and $4,142/month in total VIP-layer revenue after accounting for discounted VIP commissions. Compared with a free-only list at $7,200/month, the VIP tier lifts total revenue to $11,342/month.
